    Mersin Promotes to Silver

    Following the successful edition with the IAAF Bronze Label last year, Mersin Marathon is now declared a Silver Label Road Race.

    Having improved its organisational quality each year since its inaugural race in 2015, Mersin Marathon met the various IAAF criteria from timing services to medical measures in 2017, and the 4th International Mersin Marathon was held as an IAAF Bronze Label race on 16 December 2018. Based on the positive report of the appointed Technical Delegate, the IAAF promoted the event to Silver this year.

    International Mersin Marathon is the third IAAF Road Race Label event in Turkey after the two Gold Label races, Istanbul Marathon and Istanbul Half Marathon. The organiser of the event is Mersin Metropolitan Municipality. Timing services in Mersin are provided by Depar Timing since its inauguration. The race is scheduled to Sunday, 15 December this year.

    Toyota Family Meets At Ekiden

    Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey celebrated the 17th edition of the traditional Ekiden Cup at the company premises in Sakarya.

    The relay competition, open to Toyota staff, employees of its subsidiary industry partners, and their families, is staged on the 950-meter running course at the Sakarya Facilities of the company. Timing services for the event where 135 teams competed is once again provided by Depar Timing.

    The word ekiden comes from the combination of the Japanese characters for “station” and “transmit”. Team members pass the “tasuki”, which is the sash that each runner wears over one shoulder and under the other arm, to each other at a transition zone. Although ekiden races are not very popular outside of Japan, Toyota carries on the tradition in Turkey since 2003.

    Race Number 400

    Timing team at the swimming event in Marmaris on 4 May marked a milestone for Depar Timing. The company hit the 400-race mark.

    Founded as the electronic timing department of Depar Trading, consultant and high quality equipment provider in a wide range of sports since 1987, Depar Timing carried out the very first transponder timing in Turkey at the Eurasia Marathon in November 2006. Depar Timing shortly became a reliable partner for the organisers, and timed various running, swimming, cycling, triathlon, Ironman and classic car races both in Turkey and abroad ever since. The number of the events that Depar Timing contributed to the success have reached 400 at the International Aquamasters Open Water Swimming Half Marathon on Saturday, 4th of May 2019.

    Depar Timing will be providing timing and side services in numerous national and international races in the rest of this year.

    A Race With No Finish Line

    Wings For Life World Run, providing funds for spinal cord research, will be held in 12 countries including İzmir/Turkey on 5 May.

    The event with the motto “Run For Those Who Can’t” is organized by the non-profit Wings For Life Foundation, and the full revenue raised by the registration fees is transferred to scientific spinal cord researches. While the race starts simultaneously in 12 countries, it is also possible to participate virtually by a smart phone application developed for the purpose.     Wings For Life World Run has no finish line. In each of the cities the event is held, the competitors who are caught by a car are considered to have finished the race. The Catcher Car gives the runners a 30-minute head start, then takes off. The last runner to be caught by the Catcher Car in İzmir becomes the Turkish winner, the last participant remaining in all cities is crowned the world champion. Last year, the global winner was Aron Anderson of Sweden who covered 89,85 kilometres in Sunrise, Florida before he was caught by the car. Murat Kaya with 62,01 kilometres was the winner in İzmir.

    Swimming Festival Set To Begin

    Swimmers will once again meet in Marmaris. International Arena Aquamasters Swimming Championships will be held on 1-5 May.

    Turkey’s largest swimming festival will begin with the International Aquamasters Short Course Swimming Championship on Wednesday, 1st of May. The 3-day event will be followed by the International Aquamasters Open Water Half Marathon over a distance of 5km and the Setur Marinas 4x500m Relay Meet scheduled to 4 May. The programme will end with the traditional International Aquamasters Martı Hotels Open Water Swimming Championship of 1.5km, and the International Aquamasters Open Water Championship of 3km, consecutively on Sunday, 5 May.

    The open water meets as well as the relay race at the 10th International Arena Aquamasters Swimming Championships will be timed by Depar Timing. Detailed information on the races can be reached at the official website of the event at www.aquamasters.org.
